January 2009.
Today, throughout the planet, we are living in a very difficult situation, under the new and growing threat of nuclear danger.
In difference to what happened in the 80s, that was resolved with the unilateral disarmament by the USSR , today the silence of the media about this real danger means that the population is totally unaware, despite the threat being much greater.
The possibility of nuclear attacks materialising is closer than ever in this moment. Nuclear arsenals have not only been increasing in quantity and destructive potential, but rather have become more sophisticated and have proliferated. The transformation and the instability of the international political panorama in recent years has lead to an out-of-control situation of nuclear weapons, that today are within reach of violent groups and even individuals, before even considering the increasingly evident danger of accidents. Some of the countries that possess nuclear arsenals have already expressed, explicitly or implicitly their intention to use them if necessary, thereby annulling all International Treaties. The current international financial collapse will strengthen violence and disorder, putting humanity on the edge of nuclear catastrophe.
In their evolution, human beings, from a total dependence on natural conditions of the immediate environment, progressively gained dominance over fire, energy, and physical, chemical and biological processes until being able to produce and control nuclear reactions, to understand climatic phenomena and the processes of artificial production and reproduction of life. In this marvellous, almost miraculous process of advances and set-backs, always in an ascending spiral, we have once more reached a fork in the road.
This time, will there be a flood? Will there be an ice-age, a volcanic eruption or a mushroom cloud this time?
In order to avoid the future atomic catastrophe it is essential to:
begin immediate global nuclear disarmament;
and withdraw invading troops from occupied countries, as a minimal and necessary condition.
In addition, it is necessary to stop the logic of war-mongering and start progressive and proportional reductions in conventional weapons, coordinated by the United Nations, and implement effective mechanisms of peaceful resolution of conflicts, establishing a more just and cooperative international order.
Because all the inhabitants on the planet are hostages to the nuclear threat, and we demand our right to live in peace and liberty, as we do not live in liberty when we live under threat.
It is necessary, once and for all, to stand up and emerge from human prehistory.
The Spokesperson for New Humanism in Europe, is taking the initiative from the organisation “World without Wars”, to promote and take part in a World March for Peace and Nonviolence that will start on the 2nd of October 2009 (International Day of Nonviolence) in New Zealand and culminate on the 2nd of January 2010 in Punta de Vacas, Argentina.
With this World March, New Humanism wants to reach the depths of the consciousness of every man and woman alive on this planet, to show the real possibility of a constructive, non-violent direction that is opposed to current events. He wants the peoples to demonstrate their most sacred aspirations with all their force, so that a new, human, non-violent phenomenon is unleashed, capable of overcoming the darkness.
For Humanists to create consciousness thanks to the March and the actions that go with it will be an endeavour with much meaning that will be able to connect many hearts in Profound and Inspired Space: A Space which is where the most transcendental things in the human spirit move.
We are saying that the hour has arrived for the peoples to mobilise in order to change the path of events that day by day, and outside the control of irresponsible governments, are driving us ever-rapidly towards nuclear disaster.
The activities will continue to multiply beyond 2010, as an unstoppable phenomenon until disarmament and peace is achieved in the world.
